One of the best ways to avoid chemicals such as chlorine in your water supply is to use a shower head filter. You may have heard that chlorine is toxic and bad for your skin, but more and more research is exposing the dangerous effects it has when absorbed through the skin through hot showers.
In fact, exposure to chlorine can lead to a host of horrible symptoms such as, headaches, coughing, lung problems, nausea, and in some extreme cases loss of vision or death. And of course there are numerous studies that indicate chlorine is a cause of cancer. Lastly, there was a 2006 American Journal of Epidemiology indicating that byproducts of chlorine exposure lead to bladder cancer, specifically exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs). THM's are typically ingested through drinking water or absorption from hot water in the shower, bathing or swimming in pools with chlorine on a regular basis.
Unfortunately, chlorine is still added to water to kill bacteria and other harmful substances, but at what cost? Few people actually know about the dangerous effects of chlorine and how we are exposed to it on a high level through our daily shower routine. During a shower your pores open up and easily absorb harmful substances in the water that comes out of the shower head, mainly chlorine.
However that's not the worst part, you also inhale it during the shower which is possibly worse than through skin absorption as it easily enters the bloodstream. A chlorine shower filter is highly recommended to eliminate chloroform (the gas form of chlorine that is inhaled) from entering your bloodstream through inhalation.
Though they are not readily available at home-improvement stores where bathroom appliances are typically purchased, you can pretty easily find them doing a web search. You also won't find them manufactured by popular companies such as, Kohler, Anystream, Alsons, Danze, Royale Chrome, etc, however there are many reputable suppliers of shower filters online.
